Before June 2013 : Film director Bob Connolly took his concerns to the MLC School council.

Before filming the latest Opera House concert in June (presumably June 2013), Bob Connolly, who directed the hit Mrs Carey's Concert documentary with Sophie Raymond, was so troubled by how Mrs Carey and other MLC teachers were being treated that he and another parent took their concerns to the chair of the school's council, Pauline Johnston.

''There had been mysterious and abrupt resignations and retirements,'' he said. ''Staff morale reportedly dropped, turnover increased, parents grew worried

In the months leading up to the [concert] Karen was relentlessly criticised and eventually threatened with dismissal.''

October 2013 : Mrs Carey's shock 'departure' from MLC School is announced.

Over 24 years, Mrs Carey had built at MLC School what is widely considered to be a world-class music education program, winning national awards for excellence and inspiring generations of girls.

But Mrs Carey's shock departure from MLC school was announced this week.

Mrs Carey's departure has led to claims she was forced out after a clash with the new MLC Principal left her in tears and feeling unable to work.

Bronwyn Buckley, the mother of the school's music captain this year, believes Mrs Carey has been squeezed out.

''I don't believe she would have left, certainly not mid-year, without any explanation,'' Ms Buckley said. ''She's one who lives at the school, she loves the girls. She just wouldn't do that.''

Ms Buckley said it was troubling that the three heads of the MLC senior, middle and junior schools, Marie Herrett, Dianne Cotterill-Dormer and Diana Drummond, had also left in just over two years, as well as three other members of the MLC music staff.

''For Mrs Carey to go as well, you just have to say 'what is going on?' If she had voluntarily resigned, why didn't we know about it? Why did she just disappear? It's not like her to not communicate with her girls.''

MLC composer-in-residence James Humberstone also resigned this year after 11 years at the school.

James Humberstone, who lectures in music education at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, said he was upset Mrs Carey's time at the school had ended so unhappily.

''I just know that she's found the last few months incredibly difficult,'' he said. ''I know that Karen was talking in terms of retirement in just a couple of years. So the fact that it's become very difficult for her working at the school and essentially she feels she's had to leave just seems bizarre.''

Mr Humberstone said Mrs Carey's Opera House concerts every two years were landmarks for thousands of students because of their high musical standards and inclusiveness.

''Karen is totally dedicated to that music department, totally dedicated to a model of music education that she's spent a quarter of a century refining and making it such a flagship program in Australia.

''It just doesn't make any sense that that could be cut short.''

MLC Director of Composition Paul Stanhope also resigned this year after 13 years at the school.

Paul Stanhope, who now composes for the Sydney Symphony, said a review of the MLC Music department had resulted in ''fear and confusion'' among staff.

Mr Stanhope described the loss of Mrs Carey as a great one for the school.

''Under the previous principal, Barbara Stone, the music department had a great ally and fantastic support so it could be adventurous, innovative, passionate and committed and we felt we were supported 100 per cent,'' he said.

''A new principal came in and from my perspective the culture at MLC has changed enormously.

It went from a place of innovation to a feeling of suspicion and micro-management

It takes 20 years to build up a department like that and it takes less than a year to completely destroy it.''

MLC Music teacher Kimbali Harding also resigned from the school this year.

MLC Music teacher Kimbali Harding, a former MLC student, was expected to be Mrs Carey's successor.

Ms Harding has also resigned from MLC School this year.

The new MLC principal says "all aspects of this the matter have been dealt with in an appropriate and proper manner".

Fairfax Media sought an interview with the new MLC Principal over the issues raised by former staff and parents.

Instead, the new MLC Principal issued a statement saying MLC was disappointed to lose Mrs Carey.

''The school has dealt with all aspects of this matter in an appropriate and proper manner,'' the new Principal said.

October 2014 : Bob Connolly believes that Mrs Carey was given an 'official misconduct warning'.

The director of Mrs Carey's Concert has revealed the film's star music teacher was devastated after being repeatedly criticised and threatened with dismissal before her shock resignation from MLC School.

Bob Connolly believes Mrs Carey left after ''harsh and unwarranted treatment'' that included an official warning on grounds he considers spurious.

''Her colleagues believe the principal's official misconduct warning - after 24 years of outstanding and blameless service - finally convinced her she had no future at the school,'' Connolly said.

After Fairfax Media requested an interview with both the new MLC Principal and Mrs Johnston, the council chair released a statement saying the school could not comment for privacy reasons.

''I can assure you that the council of MLC school has been kept closely informed of developments in relation to Mrs Carey's resignation and is in no doubt that the principal dealt with it sensitively and appropriately,'' the statement said.
